Volume 12 Number 2
The I Promise Program has been
developed with the input of hundreds of organizations representing government,
police services, injury prevention groups, safe road organizations, medical
organizations, and trauma centers. This program has been designed to help teens
and parents come to an agreement on issues that relate most to teen car
crashes.
Parents and teens both sign a
contract outlining safe driving techniques. Included in the I Promise Program
promises are, "I promise to drive safely. I promise not to drink and
drive. I promise to use my safety belt. I promise to drive defensively."
Gary Direnfeld, founder and father
of a teenager, stresses the importance of a mutually signed contract. The
teenagers must know and understand safe driving techniques. However, the
program is only fully effective when parents show teenagers safe driving
examples.
After filling out all of the
necessary information and signing the contract, parents receive a rear window
decal. The decal asks, "How's my driving," and provides a toll free
number to a professional call center. Reports are then mailed to the contact
person.
This program ensures safer driving
for both teens and parents since parents are not exempt from reports of unsafe
driving. The cost of the I Promise Program is $49. This fee includes contracts,
decals, and reports. Parents may call insurance carriers to ask about a
discount for participation in the program.
