I Promise Program

The Newport News Police Department created a partnership with the originators of the "I Promise Program" to promote this safe driving initiative with first time student drivers in the City of Newport News. After reviewing and endorsing the program, NNPD partnered with the Future Business Leaders of America, (FBLA) students at Menchville High School, and the Newport News Public School Drivers Education Department, to make the program brochures and literature available to each new student driver that takes drivers education courses in Newport News.

The I Promise Program is a safe driving initiative developed for families with new young drivers. It consists of a parent-youth mutual safe-driving contract, a rear window decal, and a 1-year community monitoring service. Together parents and youth discuss, negotiate, and complete a mutual safe driving contract - a multi-item comprehensive agreement developed by youth, parents, and community members. Contract items include, a promise to drive sober; wear seat belts, drive defensively; and maintaining driver attention. To seal the contract, a decal with a toll-free number is placed in the rear-window of the car. This enables community members to monitor and report on driver behavior. Both parents are likely to have calls depending on how they drive. Calls are taken by a professional call-center. Reports are mailed to the parents via first-class mail.
