Program helps prevent tragedies

Tuesday October 1, 2002

On an almost daily basis we review the news through several news search engines. Every day there are stories about the death of young drivers, the result of teen driver car crashes.

The I Promise Program - teen safe driving initiative - is designed to reduce the risk of these events and associated trauma to family, friends and communities. The program is available across North America. The Web site is at www.ipromiseprogram.com

Every story on a teen driver car crash is an opportunity to mention the I Promise Program.

This is newsworthy and in the best interest of youth, their families and communities.

As part of our mandate to reduce teen driver car crashes, we survey other stakeholders in traffic safety to bring you newsworthy information on this matter. However, we must also rely on you, with every opportunity to bring information about the program to the public.

Teens die one or two at a time and hence the issue of teen fatalities just never takes on the same weight as when several hundreds or thousands of people die at once, yet on an annual basis some 8,000 teens perish from car crashes across North America.

Edmond Burke said, "All that is needed for evil to flourish is for enough good men (and women) to do nothing." So too it is with teen driver safety. Do nothing . . . and watch them die. Do something and help reduce the risk.

At the end of the day, the story may be about your son or daughter, niece or nephew, grandchild or neighbour.

Our plea to you: Please mention the I Promise Program when reporting on teen car crashes as a strategy for parents to help avoid these tragedies.
